Habermas Public Sphere-Market Forces or Political Forces and the Essay
Habermas Public Sphere-Market Forces or Political Forces and the Decline of the Public Sphere - Essay Example According to the compilation of Gripsrud, Moe, Molander and Murdock (2010, p. XIV), Habermasââ¬â¢ concept of ââ¬Ëpublic sphereââ¬â¢ relates to the social life of humans and how well they adjust in the society. Adjustments in the society, in this case, relates to an arena whereby the members of the society can come in and discuss the problems that affect them in the society. In the words of Habermas (1989, p. 30), it is this freedom of the public to have varying opinions that the political action is shaped so as to fit the ideas of the ââ¬Ëpublicââ¬â¢. The ââ¬Ëpublic sphereââ¬â¢ is one that explains that persons and groupings in the society have a right to assemble and deliberate issues that impact them in the course of their livelihood. On the other hand, Gripsrud, Moe, Molander and Murdock (2010, p. XIV) indicate that the ââ¬Ëpublic sphereââ¬â¢ is an avenue whereby modern day societies come together and share ideas through discussions, thus creating a channel for airing public opinions. In this instance, it is apparent that a collision between the ââ¬Ëpublic sphereââ¬â¢ and the authority that governs or rules the ââ¬Ëpublic sphereââ¬â¢ exists. The ââ¬Ëpublic sphereââ¬â¢ in this context refers to the civil society ââ¬â the beneficiaries of social labor ââ¬â whilst the authority refers to the ruling class or the vehicle that drives the need of the ââ¬Ëpublic sphereââ¬â¢ (Gripsrud, Moe, Molander and Murdock, 2010, p. XVII). In the words of Habermas (1991, p. 129), the ââ¬Ëpublic sphereââ¬â¢ determines the manner in which the ruling class will govern the ââ¬Ëpublic sphereââ¬â¢. Through the ââ¬Ëpublic sphereââ¬â¢ the laws and regulations of the market are drawn, and debates on how buying and selling will take place. Habermas (1991, p. 175) indicates that the ââ¬â¢public sphereââ¬â¢ has, in one way or another, control of the state. Habermas (1989, p. 51) emphasizes that the ââ¬Ëpublic sphereââ¬â¢ is a form of a regulatory mechanism that prevents the ruling class from oppressing the ââ¬Ëpublic sphereââ¬â¢. Gripsrud, Moe, Molander and Murdock (2010, p. XIX) are of the opinion that the ââ¬Ëpublic sphereââ¬â¢ is a form of democracy that allows for participation in the course of decision making; thus, the public opinion is turned down into a political action. This is a vivid elucidation of the fact that public opinion rules the authority of law making regulations. From another point of view, Fraser (1990, p. 59) argues that the ââ¬Ëpublic sphereââ¬â¢ has been credited for its ability to come up with mechanisms that always ensure that the state remains accountable for its actions in the society.

It can be to play 2010: The year of the correctional officerIn a year of tightened budges, officer furloughs, and increased media attention, officers stood strong.| By Barry EvertEvery year I am asked to write about the year prior. Quite honestly, I rarely agree to this because it usually has little training value. This year, though, I have made the exception. 2010 was a lot of things to a lot of people. Overall, probably, it was a rough year for most reading this. 2010 was not the year of the dragon, or the year of the dog; it was the year of the Correctional Officer.Budget cuts was the song sung from high at almost every capitol building in the country. Politicians proudly paraded themselves as the saviors of the economy as they slashed public safety budgets to new lows. At the same time new spending programs were put into place for everything from the protection of tree frogs to building bridges to nowhere. At the bottom of this pile was corrections. Many police agencies were able to scream loudly enough to get enough funding to keep their departments running, albeit barely. When Corrections agencies made the same call, we were largely ignored. Many states implemented a ââ¬Å"furloughâ⬠program, or something similar, that cut the salaries of the lowest paid employees. On top of this, training was cut to an all time low, while the hiring of new officers was frozen. Simple math tells us that it was also time for a whole generation of officers to retire. They have yet to be replaced, so mandatory overtime is the norm. During the build-up of the popularity of crack cocaine in the early 80ââ¬â¢s, crime rose to an all time high. Incarceration rates shot through the roof at the same time. This, along with tougher sentencing laws, led to a wave of prison building and hiring. By the early 90ââ¬â¢s, most departments had outgrown themselves, and were desperately hiring as many people as they could. Those officers are now due to retire. Few states took this into consideration, so as we entered this year under budget cuts, we were expected to do more with less much less.So was 2010 a loss? Not exactly. Through all of this, the community has learned an important lesson if they choose to look. In almost any other profession, these reductions in pay, along with an increase in danger at the working environment, would have led to catastrophic work stoppages, or large scale protests. But no one walked away from their duties. No one went on strike. And to the best of my knowledge, there were only a few small scale protests by officers. At the end of the day, feeling underappreciated and underpaid, correctional officers punch the clock after protecting society from those they have incarcerated. With many of the resources cut or gone, we went about our business and did our job. Yes, some mistakes were made. Many were due to a lack of resources or just plain tired officers making mistakes. With fewer resources in place, and with less staff, the average officer worked even harder than usual, and did so at a discounted salary. No walk-outs, no ââ¬Å"blue flu,â⬠no rebellion. I would never have expected less from us as a group, but others are starting to take note. People who have never dealt with corrections are starting to understand our predicament. It was not because we sat on the floor and threw a temper tantrum about our working conditions, but it was through our continued dedication to the safety of the public, regardless of what was thrown at us, that people are starting to take note of us. 2010 was the year of the Correctional Professional. I have never been prouder to be part of a group of people than I am today. I realized this about 6 months ago when I overheard several officers talking. The officers were discussing a major union conference that had just taken place. During this conference, the possibility of striking had come up. It was decided at this conference that the membership of this union could vote to strike if they felt it necessary. The officers were discussing the possibility of a strike. By the time the 5 minute conversation was over, all of the officers walked away agreeing that there was no way they would ever strike, even if it was legal to do so. The reasons ranged from not wanting to leave their brothers and sisters behind, to feeling that they were officers first, union members second. Do you think this conversation would have been the same had it been on the floor of a factory? This sentiment quickly spread throughout the state, and it was made clear to this union that striking is not now, and never will be an option; it would be better to resign. This came out of the mouths of officers who, like me, had suffered a 15% pay reduction, an increase in their medical payments, and an increase in retirement contributions. Many officers have lost their homes, or have had members in their family, or themselves, take on another job. Through it all they are still dedicated. This is why this has been the year of the Correctional Officer. Although this has been a tough year, and things are not looking any better for next year, people on the outside are getting to see us for who we really are. How many times have we said: ââ¬Å"If people only knew what we went through.â⬠The people are listening, so speak wisely and keep your head up. Donââ¬â¢t ever forget why you wear that uniform, and continue to be the proud, dedicated officers we know you can be.So I raise my glass as we pass through the last part of this year, to all of those we lost this year. To all of our brothers and sisters who have made the ultimate sacrifice: You are not forgotten. To all of us who continue to protect, I say: Bravo! The people are finally starting to listen. Make sure you are saying the right things.Be safe out there folks, and party sanely.

Higher Education And Social Awareness
Higher Education And Social Awareness INTRODUCTION Indiaââ¬â¢s higher education is the third largest one after the U.S.A. and China. For years India has made an impact in the world economy by providing intellectuals to the world. But that alone will not serve the purpose. The expectation from higher education is more than that. University Grants Commission proclaims the objectives of Indian higher education in its 12th five year plan ââ¬Å" Higher education is about promoting excellence in more ways than one: at individual level, it is an instrument of upward mobility through cultivation of excellence; for national economy, excellence of work force is a pre-requisite of sustained growth; and for humankind, excellence is a must for extending the frontiers of knowledge and cultivation of valuesâ⬠Higher education should bring intelligence, workforce and Values. While analyzing the above objectives India has brought intelligence and workforce for the country but the question is whether the higher education system brings values or social concern among the students. Education should not stop with just acquiring the intelligence to earn more income and leading a sophisticated life. It should create social awareness and self-awareness. Today the social life is eroding in India. The educated persons are ignorant of not only the long accepted social values but also the modern values of secularism, socialism, democracy and professional ethics. A recent news paper reveals that a husband and wife, both who are in Indian Administration Service have amazed lot of wealth through corruption. This brings us the question that why these highly placed people engage in corruption. Also another recent report on newspaper shows that most of the criminals today are the educated people. Now we have to think that what is wrong in the education which they acquired. It is the lack of social concern in the education. In this regard it is important to analyse whether higher education is providing the right platform for social thinking. AUTONOMY IN HIGHER EDUCATION One of the radical changes in higher education is the introduction of autonomy. Autonomy and accountability goes hand in hand. This provides the college freedom to design their curriculum. Unfortunately most of the colleges use this status as a means for fund raising. Also while designing the curriculum they give prime importance to employability and least importance to ethical and social values. This will pave way for a self-centered attitude among the educated elite. Transparency of curriculum to the common man is crucial in making autonomy by bringing social values in it. The government should monitor the autonomous colleges through universities so that autonomy is not misused by the colleges. But the sad aspects of the universities are that their focus and objectives are far away from developing the higher education. CHOICE-BASED CREDIT SYSTEM Today most of the colleges are following the CBCS system in providing education. This system, which was imposed by the government, also provides only a minimum scope for imparting social values. The important feature of CBCS is that it concentrates more on skill based electives and non-major electives. Even the system adopted by the government is not providing a platform for socially relevant higher education in India. PRIVATISATION OF HIGHER EDUCATION Today the government allows the private parties to compete in higher education. The role of private parties in higher education is inevitable. But private education mostly concentrates on technical education rather than Arts and Science. Social values are not a part in the technical education. Also an extension activity was not a part in its curriculum. Again these private institutions compete each other to admit students. So they spent crores of rupees for advertisement and campus interview but they do not concentrate on the wholistic development of the students. Finally the students become intellectuals without social awareness. A strict control on private higher education institutions are the requisite for creating social ethics among the students. FOREIGN UNIVERSITIES Today the much debated topic on higher education is allowing the foreign universities to provide higher education in India. The argument kept by the current UPA II government is that it creates a healthy competition which in turn will increase efficiency and efficiency will bring quality in higher education. This argument is correct partly. But the main question unanswered is whether these institutions can provide a platform for our students to learn our traditional values and customs. The qualities of such universities are doubtful because only the third ranked foreign universities are coming to India and their motive is to make profit only. So they do not provide the socially relevant higher education. Again even if they provide the social values in education that will be the westernized values which does not suit our country. The social values will erode and finally a chaos will prevail in our country. Another danger of allowing foreign universities in India is that the Indian institutions, mostly private has to compete with foreign universities in admitting the students. So in order to encounter the competitions of these foreign universities, our universities also have to engage in concentrating on providing only employable skills and not the social values. So this move is also going to endanger the minimum social values provided in India today. So the government has to be cautious in bringing foreign universities to India. GOVERNMENT AND HIGHER EDUCATION The role of government is crucial in bringing higher education with social concern. The government of India in its action plan report of 12th plan has emphasised that higher education should be taken out from the non-profit zone and a nominal profit should be implemented. Thus the main stake holder of higher education is trying to bring higher education towards profit earning sector. So social values will take the second seat. The government considers higher education as a liability. There is also lack of co-ordination among the institution like HRD, UGC, AIT etc. which monitors the higher education in India. MARKET ECONOMY AND HIGHER EDUCATION Today all aspects are determined by the market economy. It has also touched the higher education. The market economy always imparts a pressure on the students from the school education. It wants people to acquire employable skills to work in the private concern. On the one hand the employment in organized sector is diminishing and on the other hand the job opportunities are only available in private concerns. So survival of the fittest is the order of the day and this makes the students to concentrate more on acquiring knowledge rather than participating in social agitation or discussions in social aspects. The education providers are also not providing the room for the students to discuss the social evils. The joy of learning is missing today. Thus the market economy provides the students with lop sided development. A capitalistic attitude is prevailing among the educated students. The market also fixes the wage for the teachers in private higher education institution. As the supply exceeds the demand, the market wage is low. So these teachers do not have the urge to provide a socially relevant education. They are not ready to discuss things which are outside the curriculum (i.e) social issues and the management also does not permit them. Only good salary and job security can motivate the teachers to discuss social issues. It is also disheartening to note that 80 percent of the graduates of Metropolitan cities prefer to work in foreign countries. This shows that our education was not able to inspire the young generation to a moral commitment of working in India for the well being of common man. CONCLUSION The above analysis highlights that the present higher education provides a lop-sided development. It provides only intelligence, but not the emotional intelligence and social concern. This is a dangerous sign as most of these students may be intelligent criminals. There is difference between education with social concern and education without social concern. A best example is the terrorists who demolished the twin buildings of U.S.A. He is very intelligent in hijacking a flight and entering into the territory of U.S.A. But he does not have the social concern and compassion to the persons in towers and their relatives. So there is an urgent need for a radical change in the higher education through which we have to include social concern, which will in turn will bring peaceful co-existence of the people of India. A- Bomb :: essays research papers
The creation of the atomic bombs is one of the most important historical events in the field of weaponry. Donââ¬â¢t you think you should know some of the history behind this tremendous making of history? In my research paper, you will not only learn about the creation of the atomic bomb, you will learn about who the United States used it on first and why, who lead the project and go into great depth about him, and you will also see loads of pictures of the two first atomic bombs (and a virtual reality video of the two atomic bombs). à à à à à Before I began my project, I will give you a little background information on how the atomic bomb works. When a special type of uranium is pushed together quickly with neutrons, itââ¬â¢s nucleus splits into two pieces, releasing energy. When this happens, it also frees other neutrons, which then collide with the nearby uranium atoms, making the atoms split. If there is enough uranium, this process of splitting atoms keeps happening until all the uranium atoms have been split. This only takes a fraction of a second to occur. The results of this process are a nuclear chain reaction that releases amounts of energy never thought possible to be created in one explosion. à à à à à The special type of uranium needed for the a-bomb was U-235. This uranium only exists in tiny amounts in uranium that is dug up from the earth. Getting the U-235 from the uranium dug from the ground was a very hard and expensive procedure, so there wasnââ¬â¢t a lot of U-235. In fact, no one was sure on how to get U-235 in large amounts. Some scientists believed that the amount of U-235 need to make an a-bomb was about two tons, so it would be useless to try and build an atomic bomb because it would cost too much money and by the time the first atomic bomb was built, World War II would be over. But later on, a scientists realized that the a-bomb could be made with a lot less than two tons of U-235, so now Germany and the U.S. were in a race to make the first atomic bomb. à à à à à Atomic bomb research started in the U.S. when fears of German physicists creating an atomic bomb from uranium. Since World War II was going on and the U.S. was against Germany, the U.S. feared that the German would create this bomb and deploy it on the U.S., killing thousands of innocent Americans. Another thing that brought the U.

Plot of Pride and Prejudice :: essays research papers
Mrs. Bennet is anxious to have her five daughters marry into well houses. When a rich single, man Charles Bingley, arrives nearby, she urges her husband to get to know him. The Bennets go to a ball in a town called Meryton, and are introduced to Charles Bingley. Everyone likes him but his friend, Fitzwilliam Darcy is found to be arrogant. Mr. Darcy doesnââ¬â¢t dance with anyone outside his ââ¬Å"group,â⬠and he says that Elizabeth Bennet is attractive, but not enough to tempt him. Mr. Bingley starts to admire Jane Bennet and his love deepens to the extent that Janeââ¬â¢s sisters and Mr. Darcy get concerned. Mr. Darcy is repelled by the familyââ¬â¢s lower status and an embarrassing family. Mr. Darcy, however, still becomes interested in Elizabethââ¬â¢s good-spirited character, and Mr. Bingleyââ¬â¢s jealous disapproval do nothing to lessen Mr. Darcyââ¬â¢s interest. Caroline asks Jane to come to Netherfield. On the way there, Jane catches a cold and is forced to stay. Mrs. Bennet loves this information because she will use any means to push her daughter onto Mr. Bingley. Janeââ¬â¢s condition worsens, and Elizabeth goes to Netherfield instead. Her concern for her sister and her intellect interest Mr. Darcy even more, but he is afraid of falling in love with someone who is so much poorer. Mr. Bennetââ¬â¢s estate at Longbourn is supposed to go to Mr. Collins, a clergyman, because Mr. Bennet doesnââ¬â¢t have a son and Mr. Collins is the nearest male relative. Mr. Bennet sends his cousin on a chore to Meryton with his daughters. There they meet George Wickham, a handsome militia officer. At an evening party, Wickham tells Elizabeth his life story. Wickhamââ¬â¢s story makes Darcy look arrogant and cruel, and Elizabeth start to have a prejudice against Mr. Darcy from then on. At another ball, Elizabeth resents Wickhamââ¬â¢s absence. Later on she is also embarrassed by her family. Mrs. Bennet refuses to stop talking about what a good couple Jane and Mr. Bingley will make. On the other hand, Mary Bennet bores the whole company by trying to play the piano. Mr. Collins, suddenly, proposes to Elizabeth at the ball and she rejects. Mr. Collins doesnââ¬â¢t believe that Elizabeth is intently refusing him, but after Mr. and Mrs. Bennet explain it to him, he seems to understand. The whole Bingley party, all of a sudden, leaves Netherfield to go to London. Caroline Bingley writes to Jane that they donââ¬â¢t mean to return for the whole winter, and she tells her what a good couple Georgiana Darcy and Mr.
Acquiring a Firm Resolve: Dignifying Maturity in the Short Story
There are moments in our lives when we radically change. Something happens to us that transforms us into a new person. It may come as we read an engaging text, as we undergo an enlightening experience, or as we witness an interesting event. The catalyst for this radical change may vary, but its impact will always be the same: we can never go back to our old self, because the change, once done, marks our individual history. This is what happens to Sammy, the main character of the short story, ââ¬Å"A&Pâ⬠written by John Updike.Sammy undergoes a personal change, a change that makes him take a stand and evolve from an immature teenager to a young man strongly resolved to stand firm in his beliefs. In the first part of the story, we see Sammyââ¬â¢s immaturity as he ogles at the three scantily clad girls. He observes them like any normal teenage boy; he sees the girls as objects of interest because of the way they are dressed. à He is delighted by their presence because of his at traction to them, especially to the dominant girl in the group whom he calls Quennie, who is ââ¬Å"more than prettyâ⬠(page number).Sammy even goofs around with his co-worker Stokesie, reveling in the presence of the girls who are so misplaced, wearing bathing suits at a grocery store:You know, it's one thing to have a girl in a bathing suit down on the beach, where what with the glare nobody can look at each other much anyway, and another thing in the cool of the A & P, under the fluorescent lights, against all those stacked packages, with her feet paddling along naked over our checkerboard green-and-cream rubber-tile floor.
